The Rooster of Barecelos is an emblem of Portugal. Legend has it, a man was accused of stealing silver. He was sent to a judge, who was about to eat a rooster. The man interrupted the judge’s meal, stating that if he did indeed steal the silver, the rooster would crow when they hang him. The man was sent to the gallows, and as the judge was about to eat his meal, the rooster cawed. The man, proven innocent, was saved and set free.
